| Question
from student govt. head: What is happening? Why don't students
know? |
Privatization
(hereafter known as PZn)
1. Purchasing is already privatized
2. Maintenance will be privitized in July/August.
3. Other departments have been targeted, such as counseling
and libraries, Business and CIS academic departments. |

Library
at Truman was highly rated by students in the latest NCA accreditation.
Librarians have known since January that they might be taken
over.

CCC press release or on the
"about" page/press releases on the CCC web page. |

Disputes
the claims that the changes are "about quality". PZn is not
about quality. The Board is not made up of educators but CEOs.
PZn is about Money. This has nothing to do with the effectiveness
of the City Colleges. We all have had NCA approval. Our Board
is appointed, not elected. Can we do anything about that? |
| |
The
Board drops the ball on grants. We don't get money because after
we do all the work of writing up proposals, they just let them
sit wtihout signing off on them. This has serious consequences.
They should be evaluated on what they are doing. |
| Point
of information: |
The
Illinois Community Colleges Act states that "Educators cannot
be on the Boards." |

Student
gov't needs to be involved. Hold Board members accountable.
Watson wants to plea-bargain with faculty. Board is divided.
Power struggle between Watson and other members. |
| Students
to faculty: |
What
did they tell each union? We have a year and a half.
Tell us how we can better serve the community? Help us reach
the community. |

Chancellor
was offering students a deal on their concerns at OH if they
would back off on the privatization thing. |
| Student: |
We
want to have a teach-in at HW and let people know it is about
$$ Need for Research in order to do Organizing: We have to go
back to square #1, i.e. give info-fact sheets to our own students.
This is basic organizing 101. |
| Faculty |
It
is all about Contracts, Contracts, Contracts! American Express
is connected to which Board members? This is not national AM
EX, it is local company bought by am ex. |

Latino
newspapers are planning to interview Latino Counselors about
the threat to their department of Counseling. "Political battles
require political means." |

We
need research because WE don't know anything. The school keeps
us in the dark about changes.
This is the first time in decades that faculty has ever invited
us to meet with them. Thank you for the respect!
We support you but we need your support too. We are working
without any contract and those of us in financial aid and business
offices may be the next ones on the chute out of here. |

Organizing
Part-time adjuncts, known now as "contingent workers." Was a
contingent worker in California, where they are organized into
AFT and getting their demands heard all over the state for a
reasonable fraction of the pay of fulltime workers and benefits.
They are demanding $$ in the Governor's budget to increase pay
for part-timers. This will help the fulltimers, should they
succeed. |
| A
Professional |
Here
at CCC the Chancellor puts out deliberate misinformation on
the pay rates of contingent faculty. The Midwest has the lowest
pay rates for contingent faculty in the country. We may all
be contingent workers before we are through working so it behooves
us to address this issue Now. |
| Discussion |
Whether
this issue of Adjuncts/contingents should be a separate sub-committee.
Yes. |
| (HW)
spoke: |
"What
we do has value, not only to our students, but to the broad
business community. The privatization brush paints us as incompetant,
overpaid. lazy. We have to counter this idea. People outside
of faculty have no idea what all we do."
Collecting information on faculty work/projects and faculty
successes (their students, etc.) Will get a form out to each
campus. Please fill it out and get it back to us, so it can
be compiled into a public relations |

Committees
were formed and met at the end of the meeting:
Research, Website, Writing, Outreach, Internal Communication,
Events, Solidarity, Adjuncts/Contingent Workers. Students on
all committees. |

These
notes are partial from a 2 and 1/2 hour meeting and do not represent
everything important that was said. Next time we have to do
a better job of co-ordinating the note-takers and perhaps have
three. |
